1. Introduction: Welcome to TidalBeacon
Thank you for choosing the TidalBeacon strategy from Tidal Edge Investing. This manual is designed for traders who want to understand how and why this tool works, especially those new to extreme mean-reversion concepts.
TidalBeacon is not a general-purpose trading strategy. It is a specialized, high-conviction tool that looks for extreme exhaustion points in the market — moments when price has stretched significantly beyond its normal range and shows signs of reversal.
While TidalCore focuses on capturing regular swings around a dynamic fair-value ribbon, TidalBeacon waits for rarer, more powerful moments: when price closes outside the Bollinger Bands with extreme RSI readings. These are the moments where mean reversion has historically shown some of its strongest edge.
What Makes TidalBeacon Different?
TidalBeacon is deliberately aggressive and low-frequency. When it triggers a BOTTOM signal, it deploys 100% of available cash. When it triggers a TOP signal, it sells the entire position. This is intentional. The strategy is designed to act decisively at major turning points rather than scale in gradually.
This approach works best in ranging or choppy markets and should generally be avoided (or heavily filtered) during strong, sustained trends.
Core Philosophy
TidalBeacon is built on a simple but powerful idea: The biggest moves often happen after the most extreme readings.
By combining Bollinger Band extremes with RSI confirmation and an optional ADX ranging filter, TidalBeacon aims to identify moments of maximum exhaustion — both to the upside and downside — and act with conviction.
2. Getting Started: Adding & Configuring TidalBeacon
Adding the Script to TradingView (Invite-Only Access)
TidalBeacon is distributed as an invite-only Indicator. Tidal Edge Investing grants access through TradingView’s secure invite system, and the script appears automatically in your account once you have been invited.
- Open TradingView.com, and log into your account (Essential plan or higher recommended for alerts and multiple indicators).
- Open the chart of the asset you want to trade (e.g., TSLA, NVDA, SPY).
- Click the Indicators button (the fx icon) located in the top toolbar above the chart.
- In the Indicators dialog that opens, switch to the Invite-only tab on the left side.
- Find TidalBeacon (or the exact title provided with your invite) in the list and click it to add the strategy to your chart.
- Once the strategy appears on your chart, click the small gear icon ⚙️ next to the strategy name (in the chart legend or data window) to open the full settings panel. This is where you will configure all the inputs described throughout this manual.
Initial Capital & Starting Shares
Starting Cash ($) — This is the simulated cash balance at the beginning of your backtest. Set it to match your actual or planned trading account size so position sizing calculations feel realistic. Default is set to $100,000. For smaller accounts, set this input to $10,000 or $25,000 and observe how the percentage-based sizing behaves.
Starting Shares — Use this if you already hold shares of the asset and want the backtest to continue tracking Profit and Loss (P&L) on that existing position. Most new users should leave this input at 0 for a clean "fresh start" simulation.
3. Core Detection Logic — Top & Bottom Signals
This is the heart of TidalBeacon and how it functions.
How Top & Bottom Signals Are Generated
A BOTTOM signal fires when price closes below the lower Bollinger Band AND RSI is below the oversold threshold (Default: 25). A TOP signal fires when price closes above the upper Bollinger Band AND RSI is above the overbought threshold (Default: 75). Adjust the RSI Overbought and RSI Oversold numbers slowly up or down until you see one or two signals in each instance or in quick succession. Bottom signals are often one of the most powerful signals in the strategy. When using this tool, it is common and acceptable to see 2 or the rare 3 TOP signals in short succession on your chart, as exact tops are much harder to predict. These are classic "reversion to the mean" extremes. TidalBeacon also provides visual labels and background highlighting so you can quickly see when these conditions occur.
4. Filters — Protecting Against Strong Trends
One of the biggest dangers with extreme mean-reversion tools is using them during strong trends. TidalBeacon includes a powerful filter to help with this.
ADX Ranging Filter (Recommended: ON for most users)
When enabled, TidalBeacon will only generate signals when ADX is below the threshold (Default: 25). This means signals are only allowed when the market is ranging, not trending strongly.
This is one of the most important risk controls in the strategy. In strong trends, price can “walk the Bollinger Bands” for extended periods. Without this filter, you risk repeatedly buying into strong downtrends or selling into strong uptrends.
Note that this setting can be overly restrictive.
5. Execution Rules — Aggressive Position Sizing
This is where TidalBeacon differs significantly from other Tidal Edge Tools.
BOTTOM Signals = Full Deployment
When a valid BOTTOM signal occurs and you have available cash, TidalBeacon will attempt to invest 100% of your current cash into the position (after accounting for commissions and whole-share rounding).
This is an all-in approach at extreme oversold levels. It is designed for high-conviction reversals.
TOP Signals = Full Exit
When a valid TOP signal occurs, TidalBeacon will sell 100% of your current shares.
This is a complete exit — not scaling out. The philosophy here is that if price has reached a true extreme, it is better to take profits and wait for the next setup rather than leaving part of the position exposed to a potential reversal.
Important Warning: Because of the 100% sizing on both entries and exits, this strategy can produce large swings in portfolio value. It is not suitable for small accounts or traders who are uncomfortable with high volatility in position sizing.
6. Visuals, Alerts & Mobile Tracker
TidalBeacon includes several visual and practical tools:
- Show Top/Bottom Labels: Displays clear “BOTTOM BUY” and “TOP SELL” labels on the chart.
- Show Background Highlights: Highlights the chart background in amber/gold when Top or Bottom conditions are met.
- Mobile Portfolio Tracker: Shows a compact table in the top-right corner with Current Shares, Current Cash, and Strategy ROI %.
Recommended Starting Approach: Turn on both labels and background highlights, but leave the strategy in observation mode first. Watch how often these extreme signals appear and how price behaves afterward. Slowly adjust the RSI numbers up or do before enabling live trading.
7. Backtesting Controls
Date Range Controls
TidalBeacon includes standard date range controls and the “Exit Full Position on Last Historical Bar” option. The Start Year/Month/Day and End Year/Month/Day inputs let you define exactly which period the strategy is active whether backtesting or actively trading. Once actively trading, set the start date to the current date and the end date to a date at least several years in the future to allow for buy and sell alerts to be generated and your portfolio to be tracked accurately.
The following tips are essential for proper backtesting:
- Test with enough data and trades — Use long historical periods (ideally multiple years) that include bull, bear, and sideways regimes. Aim for dozens of trades rather than a handful—small samples produce misleading results that don’t hold up live.
- Best Practice - Test across multiple market regimes (bull, bear, and sideways). Because this is a low-frequency strategy, you need a longer backtest period (ideally 3+ years) to see a meaningful number of signals.
8. Best Practices & Risk Management for Beginners
TidalBeacon is a high-conviction, low-frequency tool. It should be used differently than more active strategies like TidalCore.
Recommended Starting Configuration
| Setting | Recommended Value | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| RSI Oversold / Overbought | 25 / 75 | Higher conviction signals |
| Use ADX Ranging Filter | Enabled | Avoid strong trends |
| Show Labels & Background | Enabled | Learn signal behavior first |
| Trigger Live Trading | Start in observation | Understand frequency first |
| Account Size | Larger accounts preferred | 100% sizing creates big swings |
Key Guidelines
Start in Observation Mode: Enable labels and background highlights but do not trade live for the first 4–8 weeks.
Use on Appropriate Assets: Works best on liquid stocks and major crypto pairs. Avoid low-liquidity assets.
Respect the Ranging Filter: If the ADX filter is frequently blocking signals, the market is likely trending.
Position Sizing Awareness: Because this strategy goes all-in on BOTTOM signals, only use it with capital you’re comfortable seeing swing significantly.
Combine with Other Tools: Many traders use TidalBeacon alongside TidalCore for regular swings and major reversals.
Appendix A: Core Trading Terminology
Bollinger Bands A volatility indicator consisting of a middle band and upper/lower bands. Price closing outside the bands often signals extremes.
RSI (Relative Strength Index) A momentum oscillator (0-100). Readings below 25–30 are considered deeply oversold; above 70–75 are considered deeply overbought.
ADX (Average Directional Index) Measures the strength of a trend. Values above 25 generally indicate a strong trend. TidalBeacon uses this to avoid generating signals during strong trending markets.
Mean Reversion The tendency of prices to return toward their average after deviating significantly.
Ranging vs Trending Market Ranging markets oscillate between support and resistance (ideal for this strategy). Trending markets make sustained new highs or lows.

No Guarantee of Performance
Past performance of any trading strategy, including backtested results shown by TidalBeacon, is not indicative of future results. Markets can and do change. A strategy that performed well historically may lose money in live trading due to changing volatility, liquidity, news events, execution differences, and many other factors.
Risk of Loss
Trading stocks, ETFs, options, crypto, and other financial instruments involves substantial risk of loss and is not suitable for all investors. You should only trade with capital you can afford to lose entirely. Leverage, margin, and concentrated positions dramatically increase risk.
