1. Introduction: Welcome to TidalCore Crypto
Thank you for choosing the TidalCore Crypto Mean Reversion Strategy from Tidal Edge Investing. This training manual is written specifically for traders who are new to both Pine Script strategies and cryptocurrency trading. This manual assumes you have received access to the invite-only version of this indicator and explains every input in plain language, including how and why the defaults are set the way they are.
TidalCore Crypto is a mean-reversion strategy designed for the 24/7 cryptocurrency markets. This strategy identifies when price has deviated significantly from a dynamic "fair value" zone (the Market Wave ribbon) and looks to buy deep pullbacks while selling strong extensions. The strategy includes multiple layers of confirmation (RSI, ADX trend filters, candle direction, and optional bearish divergence) to improve signal quality in the fast-moving crypto environment.
What Makes This Version Crypto-Specific?
This version of TidalCore has been adapted for cryptocurrencies with the following key differences from the stock/equity version:
- Fractional Units: Supports buying and selling fractional amounts of crypto (down to 6+ decimal places) thanks to ‘precision=8’ in the strategy settings.
- Starting Crypto Input: Allows you to simulate an existing fractional crypto position at the start of the backtest.
- Data Window & Mobile Tracker: Display current crypto holdings with 6-decimal precision instead of whole coins.
- Bearish RSI Divergence: Added as an independent sell signal to catch early momentum exhaustion in crypto's volatile moves.
- 24/7 Market Awareness: The strategy works on any timeframe but is particularly suited to crypto's continuous trading environment.
How to Use This Manual
Each major group of inputs used by TidalCore Crypto is explained in its own chapter. For every setting you will learn:
- What it does in plain English
- Why the default/recommended value was chosen
- How changing inputs affect your trading results and risk
- Beginner-friendly starting points
By the end of this manual, you will understand the full logic of the strategy and feel confident customizing it for Bitcoin, Ethereum, altcoins, or any other cryptocurrency pair. Appendix A lays out key concepts and terminology.
2. Getting Started: Adding & Configuring TidalCore Crypto
Adding the Script to TradingView (Invite-Only Access)
TidalCore Crypto is distributed as an invite-only Indicator. Tidal Edge Investing grants access through TradingView’s secure invite system, and the script appears automatically in your account once you have been invited.
- Open TradingView.com, and log into your account (Essential plan or higher recommended for alerts and multiple indicators).
- Open the chart of the cryptocurrency pair you want to trade (e.g., BTCUSD, ETHUSD, or any other pair on your preferred exchange).
- Click the Indicators button (the fx icon) located in the top toolbar above the chart.
- In the Indicators dialog that opens, switch to the Invite-only tab on the left side.
- Find TidalCore Crypto (or the exact title provided with your invite) in the list and click it to add the strategy to your chart.
- Once the strategy appears on your chart, click the small gear icon ⚙️ next to the strategy name (in the chart legend or data window) to open the full settings panel. This is where you will configure all the inputs described throughout this manual.
Initial Capital & Starting Crypto
Starting Cash ($) — This is the simulated cash balance at the beginning of your backtest. Set it to match your actual or planned trading account size so position sizing calculations feel realistic. Default is set to $100,000 (in USD or USDT equivalent). For smaller accounts, set this input to $10,000 or $25,000 and observe how the percentage-based sizing behaves.
Starting Crypto — Use this field to simulate an existing fractional crypto position at the start of the backtest. Enter the exact amount of crypto you already hold (supports 6+ decimal places). Most users should leave this input at 0.0 for a clean "fresh start" simulation.
3. Order Entry & Exit Rules — Quality Filters
This section contains some of the most important "why" settings in the entire script. These filters determine not just when you get a signal but the quality of that signal. Mean reversion strategies live or die by the quality of their entries — buying any random dip usually leads to catching falling knives. These filters are especially important in crypto's high-volatility environment.
Directional Candle Thresholds
Long Threshold (%) + Use Long Threshold — Default: -5.0% enabled.
This requires the current candle to be down at least 5% from the candle’s open before a BUY signal is allowed. In other words, you only buy weakness. Why? Because in mean reversion, you want to step in when sellers are exhausted, not when the candle is still strong green. Buying green candles often means chasing momentum that can continue against you. In crypto, where moves can be violent, this filter helps avoid buying into short-term bounces that quickly reverse. Setting this input to 0 disables the filter (more signals, lower average quality). For beginners, keep this input between -3% and -7%. More negative = stricter, fewer but higher-conviction buys.
Exit Threshold (%) + Use Exit Threshold — Default: +5.0% enabled.
This is a mirror image of long threshold (%) specific to sells: only allow SELL signals on candles that are up at least 5% from open. This helps you to sell into strength rather than into weakness. Again, setting this input to 0 disables the filter. It is recommended to keep enabled for better exits.
Buy & Sell Buffers
Buy Buffer (%) (Default: 2.0) and Sell Buffer (%) (Default: 2.0). These create an extra safety zone beyond the Market Wave ribbon. A buy only triggers when price reaches the lower band minus the buy buffer. Higher values (3-4%) = more conservative, deeper pullbacks required. 1-3% is the typical sweet spot for crypto.
Restriction Modes (The Heart of Mean Reversion Discipline)
Only Buy Restriction — Options: Off / Below Basis / Below TidalCore Ribbon (Default)
This is one of the most powerful controls. "Below TidalCore Ribbon" means a buy signal is only valid when price is trading below the lower Market Wave band (after buffer). This forces you to buy at the deepest part of the pullback — exactly where mean reversion has the highest edge. "Below Basis" is less strict (buy on any pullback to the middle line). "Off" removes the restriction entirely (use with extreme caution — you will get many low-quality signals). For learning the strategy, keep this input on "Below TidalCore Ribbon."
Only Sell Restriction — Options: Off / Above Basis / Above TidalCore Ribbon (Default)
This applies the same logic on the sell side. "Above TidalCore Ribbon" ensures you only sell when price has extended strongly above the upper band. This is how you capture the "ripoff" part of mean reversion. Beginners should leave this input at the default.
Bearish RSI Divergence Sell (Independent Signal)
Use Bearish RSI Divergence as Independent Sell Signal (Default: ON) + Lookback (30) + Min RSI (65).
This powerful feature detects when price makes a higher high but RSI makes a lower high — a classic warning that upward momentum is weakening even while price is still rising. When enabled, this can trigger an independent SELL signal (subject to your current Sell Restriction mode and RSI being sufficiently high). Bearish Divergence acts as an early warning system in crypto's often parabolic moves. The lookback controls how far back the tool searches for the highest high/RSI pair.
4. Trade Size — Position Sizing for Crypto
How much you buy or sell on each signal is just as important as when you get the signal. Poor position sizing can turn a good strategy into a portfolio killer through overexposure or under-utilization.
Percentage vs Fixed Dollar Sizing
Percentage Trade Size (Default: enabled) + Entry Trade Size (%) (Default: 5%) and Exit Trade Size (%) (Default: 5%). When enabled, every buy uses 5% of your current total portfolio value (cash + crypto). This is the recommended mode for almost all users because position size automatically scales up as your account grows from profits and scales down during drawdowns — natural risk management.
Fixed Trade Size (toggle) + Entry Trade Size ($) / Exit Trade Size ($) — When enabled, every trade attempts to use exactly this dollar amount regardless of portfolio size. This is useful if you want to target a specific dollar risk per trade or if you are running a very small account and want consistent crypto quantities. Most users should leave Percentage mode on.
5. Market Wave Ribbon — The Core Engine
The Market Wave ribbon is the heart of TidalCore Crypto. It creates a dynamic, volatility-adjusted channel around price that defines "fair value." The strategy primarily buys when price reaches the lower edge of this channel and sells when it reaches the upper edge.
Understanding Scope
Scope (0.5=micro → 10=macro) — Default: 5.5
This is the single most important "feel" setting for the strategy. Scope controls the wavelength/sensitivity of the ribbon:
- Low Scope (0.5 - 2.0): Short-term, micro swings. The ribbon reacts quickly to price. You get many more signals but also more noise and whipsaws. Good for lower timeframes or very choppy assets.
- Medium Scope (3.0 - 6.0): Balanced sweet spot (Default: 5.5). Captures swings lasting several days to a couple of weeks on daily charts. Good compromise between frequency and quality.
- High Scope (7.0 - 10.0): Macro, slower swings. Fewer signals, but each one tends to be higher quality and captures larger moves. Better for longer-term position trading or less volatile assets.
How is the ribbon actually built? The script calculates a double-smoothed EMA (basis), then adds/subtracts a multiple of ATR (Average True Range) to create upper and lower bands, then smooths everything again. The result is a volatility-adjusted channel that expands in wild markets and contracts in calm ones — exactly what you want for mean reversion.
6. Enhancements — Filters & Risk Management
These toggles add powerful confirmation layers that help the strategy avoid low-quality signals in crypto's often-trending or news-driven environment. They are the reason TidalCore can avoid many of the classic pitfalls of naive mean reversion systems.
RSI Filter
Use RSI Filter (Default: ON) + RSI Length (14) + Oversold (35) / Overbought (65).
When enabled, buys are only allowed when RSI is oversold and sells only when RSI is overbought. This prevents buying into falling knives that still have strong bearish momentum and prevents selling too early in strong uptrends. The default 35/65 levels are slightly less extreme than classic 30/70, giving a good balance of frequency and confirmation in crypto.
ADX Trend Prevention
Prevent Buys in Strong Downtrends (Default: ON) and Prevent Sells in Strong Uptrends (Default: ON).
ADX (Average Directional Index) measures trend strength regardless of direction (0-100). Readings above 25 indicate a strong trend. The script also looks at +DI and -DI to determine trend direction. When "Prevent Buys in Strong Downtrends" is on, the strategy completely blocks normal buy signals if ADX > 25 and the downtrend is dominant. This is crucial: mean reversion often works poorly when a crypto is in free-fall. The same logic protects profits by blocking routine sells during powerful uptrends (let winners run). Top/Bottom signals can still fire if you have them enabled. These two toggles are among the highest-value risk controls in the entire script — leave them ON unless you have a specific reason to disable.
7. TidalBeacon Overlay (Top/Bottom) — Extreme Reversion Signals
This optional layer adds high-conviction extreme signals using Bollinger Bands + RSI, similar in concept to the main Market Wave but focused on the most stretched conditions. These signals have execution priority over regular Market Wave signals when their respective Trigger Buy/Sell toggles are enabled.
How Top & Bottom Signals Work
A BOTTOM signal fires when price closes below the lower Bollinger Band AND RSI is below the oversold threshold (Default: 25). A TOP signal fires when price closes above the upper Bollinger Band AND RSI is above the overbought threshold (Default: 75). Adjust the RSI Overbought and RSI Oversold numbers slowly up or down until you see one or two signals in each instance or in quick succession. Bottom signals are often one of the most powerful signals in the strategy. When using this overlay, it is common and acceptable to see 2 or the rare 3 TOP signals in short succession on your chart, as exact tops are much harder to predict. These represent classic exhaustion points. Visual labels and background highlighting make it easy to see when these conditions occur even if you leave the trigger-trade features off.
Trigger Buy/Sell on Top/Bottom
Trigger Buy on BOTTOM Signal + BOTTOM Buy % of Cash (Default: 100% when enabled). When turned on, a valid BOTTOM signal will deploy the chosen percentage of your available cash. This is the most aggressive way to use the strategy — going "all in" (or scaled) at extreme oversold points. Great for high-conviction names but use with caution on smaller accounts.
Trigger Sell on TOP Signal + TOP Sell % of Crypto (Default: 33%). When enabled, a valid TOP sells the chosen percentage of current crypto holdings with highest priority. The default input of 33% means you scale out 1/3 of the position at the extreme high — locking in profits while leaving 2/3 to run if the move continues. This is often smarter than selling 100% at the first top.
Filters & Visuals
You can apply a 200 EMA trend filter and ADX ranging filter specifically to Top/Bottom signals to avoid using them in strong trends. Note that this can be overly restrictive.
Background highlights and labels are highly recommended for learning when these extreme conditions appear on your chosen pairs.
8. Backtesting Controls & Mobile Portfolio Tracker
Date Range Controls
Use the Start/End Date controls to test across different crypto market regimes (2022 bear market, 2023-2025 bull runs, etc.). The "Exit Full Position on Last Historical Bar" option is useful when backtesting a specific time period. Once actively trading, set the start date to the current date and the end date to a date at least several years in the future to allow for buy and sell alerts to be generated and your portfolio to be tracked accurately.
The following are tips essential for proper backtesting:
- Test with enough data and trades — Use long historical periods (ideally multiple years) that include bull, bear, and sideways regimes. Aim for hundreds of trades rather than a handful—small samples produce misleading results that don’t hold up live.
- Validate with out-of-sample testing — Optimize parameters on one period (in-sample), then test on later unseen data (out-of-sample). This helps detect overfitting. Walk-forward testing is even better for robustness.
Mobile Portfolio Tracker
The Mobile Friendly Portfolio Tracker (Default: ON) displays a compact table in the top-right corner showing Current Crypto (with 6-decimal precision), Current Cash, and TidalCore Strategy ROI %. This is invaluable when checking charts on the TradingView mobile app, where the full Data Window is harder to access. The tracker updates in real time as the backtest progresses.
9. How TidalCore Crypto Executes Trades — Priority Order
Here is the simplified decision flow the TidalCore strategy follows on every bar (when in date range):
Buy Priority
- Trigger Bottom Buy (if enabled) — Highest priority.
- Normal Market Wave Buy (subject to all filters and restrictions).
Sell Priority
- Trigger Top Sell (if enabled) — Highest priority.
- Bearish RSI Divergence Sell (independent, if enabled and conditions met).
- Normal Market Wave Sell (subject to all filters).
All of these calculations occur automatically. Your job as the trader is to choose good input settings for the asset and market environment, monitor the equity curve and trade list, and adjust when regimes change.
10. Best Practices & Recommended Starting Settings
Recommended Starting Configuration
For your first backtests on any new crypto pair, here are some conservative defaults:
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Entry / Exit % | 3% - 5% | Manage crypto volatility |
| Buy / Sell Buffers | 2.0% - 3.0% | Deeper confirmation |
| RSI & ADX Filters | Enabled | Avoid strong trends |
| Scope | 5.0 - 5.5 | Balanced signals |
| Trigger Top/Bottom Sells/Buys | OFF initially | Learn visuals first |
Paper Trade First — Before risking real capital, run the strategy in TradingView replay mode or forward-test on a paper trading account for at least 1-2 months across different market conditions (including high-volatility events and news-driven moves).
Diversify Across Pairs — Do not run TidalCore Crypto on a single coin with 100% of your capital. Consider running it on 3-5 uncorrelated or loosely correlated pairs so that when one coin is in a strong trend (and the strategy is mostly sitting out), others may be oscillating and generating good mean-reversion opportunities.
Review Metrics Regularly — After every backtest, examine Strategy ROI vs Buy & Hold ROI and vs Do Nothing ROI in the Data Window. Also review the trade list and note how often divergence and Top/Bottom signals fired. Adjust parameters only after you understand the baseline behavior. The goal should be to outperform Buy & Hold as often as possible across multiple timeframes. If the strategy significantly underperforms Buy & Hold in strong bull markets, try enabling Use RSI Filter and Prevent Buy/Sell in Strong Downtrends/Uptrends filters.
Re-Optimize Periodically — Markets change. A Scope value that worked beautifully in 2023 may need adjustment in 2026. Re-run optimization or manual sensitivity tests every 6-12 months or after major volatility regime changes.
Appendix A: Core Terminology Glossary
This glossary explains the key concepts used throughout TidalCore Crypto. Understanding these terms will make you a much more effective user of the strategy.
Mean Reversion
The tendency of prices to return toward their historical average or "fair value" after deviating significantly. TidalCore Crypto is built entirely around this concept — buying deep pullbacks and selling strong extensions with the expectation that price will revert.
Market Wave Ribbon
TidalCore Crypto’s custom volatility-adjusted channel (basis + upper/lower bands). The ribbon is created from a double-smoothed EMA plus ATR-based deviation. The ribbon defines the zones where mean-reversion trades are triggered.
RSI (Relative Strength Index)
A momentum oscillator (0-100) that measures the speed and change of recent price movements. Readings below ~30-35 indicate oversold conditions (potential buy); above ~65-70 indicate overbought (potential sell). TidalCore Crypto uses RSI as a confirmation filter and for divergence detection.
ADX / +DI / -DI (Average Directional Index)
ADX measures trend strength (not direction). Values above 25 typically indicate a strong trend. +DI and -DI show whether bulls or bears are in control. TidalCore Crypto uses these to block trades that would fight a strong trend.
Bollinger Bands
A volatility indicator consisting of a middle moving average and upper/lower bands plotted at standard deviation multiples (usually 2). Price closing outside the bands can signal extremes. TidalCore Crypto’s optional Top/Bottom system uses Bollinger Bands + RSI to detect high-probability reversal points.
ATR (Average True Range)
A measure of market volatility. TidalCore Crypto uses ATR to dynamically size the width of the Market Wave ribbon so that bands expand in volatile crypto moves and contract in calmer periods.
EMA (Exponential Moving Average)
A type of moving average that gives more weight to recent prices. The Market Wave basis is built from a double EMA. The optional 200 EMA trend filter uses a long-term EMA to determine overall market direction bias.
Pyramiding
The ability to add multiple entries to the same position. TidalCore Crypto allows up to 3 pyramided Long entries. This lets you build a larger core position across successive pullbacks at improving average prices.
Bearish RSI Divergence
Price makes a higher high but RSI makes a lower high within the lookback window. Classic warning that upward momentum is weakening even as price continues to rise. TidalCore Crypto can use this as an independent sell signal when enabled.
Backtesting
Running a trading strategy on historical data to see how it would have performed. TidalCore Crypto’s backtest engine simulates realistic fills, 0.1% commission, and fractional unit rounding. TidalCore Crypto also tracks cash, crypto holdings, cost basis, and P&L in real time.
ROI (Return on Investment)
Percentage change in portfolio value from the starting equity. TidalCore Crypto shows Strategy ROI, Buy & Hold ROI, and Do Nothing ROI side-by-side in the Data Window so you can see whether active trading added value.
Data Window
The right-side panel in TradingView that shows all the TidalCore Ribbon values from a script. TidalCore Crypto outputs a rich set of portfolio metrics (including Current Crypto with 6-decimal precision), benchmarks, and trade volume numbers here for detailed analysis.
Mobile Portfolio Tracker
A compact table displayed in the top-right corner of the chart (when enabled) showing Current Crypto, Current Cash, and Strategy ROI %. Especially useful on the TradingView mobile app where the full Data Window is harder to access.
